Spider veins are fine, superficial veins that are usually visible on the legs, but can also appear on other parts of the body. They are often medically harmless, but are a cosmetic problem for many sufferers. With modern treatment methods, spider veins can be greatly faded or removed.
Causes
Spider veins are caused by the dilation of the finest skin veins. There is often a congenital weakness of the connective tissue, which makes the small vessels more visible. Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, hormonal contraceptives or the menopause, can also widen the veins.
Standing or sitting for long periods also slows down the blood flow and favours the formation of fine veins. With increasing age, the elasticity of the tissue decreases, so that spider veins develop more easily. As the cause can also lie in diseased, deeper veins, it is always recommended to have these examined in advance, e.g. by ultrasound.
